The top three largest problems our Southern Resident killer whales face daily starvation from lack of fish, vessel noise that disrupts their communication, and toxins such as plastic waste being thrown in the ocean.

Orca's being the largest and one of the most intelligent members of the dolphin family need our help if they are to be saved from extinction.

Unfortunately, we are responsible for the position they are in. Humans created these problems which are threatening their existence on this earth.

It's time to clean up the mess we made and make amends.

Now more than ever it is vital that we recycle our plastic. Plastic that is thrown in the ocean has had a large impact on the health and safety of our Southern Resident killer whales. By recycling, you are keeping your plastic out of the ocean and not exposing all marine life to the harmful toxins and contaminants they could ingest from our plastic waste being thrown in the ocean. Given the current state of the world with the covid- 19 pandemic people are ordering take-out food from home more than ever which means even more use of plastic. With our population's greater need for the use of plastic given the current times, it's crucial that we put forth a greater effort in recycling our waste.

With Spring right around the corner, the private boating sector needs to be mindful of how they are utilizing time spent on the water. Meaning, if you own a yacht, fishing boat, or any kind of marine vessel; it's important to follow the "Be Whale Wise" guidelines.

It is unlawful to approach endangered Southern Resident killer whales from 300 yards (274.3 meters) away. Additionally, it is unlawful to position a vessel to be in the path of or behind any killer whale at any point located within 400 yards (365.8 metres) of the whale. And, lastly, do NOT travel faster than 7 knots within 1/2 mile of any killer whale, and disengage your engine within 300 yards.

Last of all it's important to be mindful of the seafood we buy. It's important to buy good seafood from the right sources that are practicing good sustainable methods in ways they gather their seafood from the ocean. Overfishing is a huge problem not only for the Southern Resident killer whales, but it depletes the nurseries which are vital to sustain the genetic diversity of our wild fish populations. By supporting sustainable seafood brands and taking a few moments to research what you're eating and providing for your family you are in a better position to purchase sustainable brands before you hit the market.

Speak to your friends and family regarding ways to become stewards of our environment. The more people we make aware of these issues the larger the impact we can make towards a feel-good healthy change for our planet, and the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales!
