Orca Conservancy submitted a public comment to the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) urging fair, science-based coordination in salmon management. Pacific Northwest Chinook are harvested across a broad range, including in fisheries far from their rivers of origin, so management decisions can affect how many return to their home waters. These salmon sustain healthy ecosystems and fishing communities, are vital to Tribal treaty fisheries, and provide essential prey for Southern Resident killer whales. We urge PFMC to lead in a way that respects Tribal sovereignty and treaty rights while supporting salmon recovery, fishing communities, and the recovery of Southern Resident killer whales.
